Ultrasound Tips & FAQ

What is the difference between 2D/3D/4D and HD Ultrasounds?

2D scans are the traditional ones you are used to seeing in black and white.

3D is three dimensional allowing to see depth in the Ultrasound image.

4D is the ability to watch the 3D image in real time like a video.

HD is the newest technology on the market which allows us to provide the best quality images with a lighting technique.

What is the best fetal age for gender determination?

14 weeks and beyond is usually a good time for gender determination but if we are unable to provide this service to you at 14 weeks because of factors such as baby position or fluid clarity, we will bring you back free of charge.

What is the best time to have a 3D/4D/HD Ultrasound done?

We recommend getting this scan around 22 weeks up until the baby’s birth.  However, the ideal time for excellent images is around 24-36 weeks when the baby develops more fat and a more defined face.  After 36 weeks there is less room and decreased fluid so some of the images might not be as clear.

What is the difference between an Elective and Diagnostic Prenatal Ultrasound?

An Elective Ultrasound is a non-medical test performed for creating bonding and an intimate connection between you and your baby.  The purpose of a diagnostic Ultrasound is used by trained medical professionals who abide by strict standards and are usually covered by insurance.  We recommend all patients be under the care of an OB/Gyn Doctor at the time of your appointment.

Is Ultrasound safe for my baby?

Ultrasound is absolutely safe for you and your unborn baby.  Ultrasound uses no radiation.  3D/4D Ultrasound uses the same intensity of Ultrasound as seen in 2D scans.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, appointments are required for all services.

How many family and friends should I bring with me?

You can bring as many family and friends as you would like for any scan performed.  This is an exciting time for family and loved ones so the more the merrier.

Is the Ultrasound covered by Insurance?

3D/4D/HD Ultrasound is an elective procedure not covered by insurance at this time and does not take the place of the Ultrasound ordered by your Doctor.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Obtaining the best images requires adequate amniotic fluid and this is done by staying hydrated.  Proper hydration will allow a beautiful window for the best optimal images.  Drink plenty of water up to three days before your appointment.

Will I always get great pictures of my baby?

We strive to get you the best images however, that is not always possible.  A lot of factors go into obtaining a quality image like fetal position, maternal tissue, maternal hydration, amniotic fluid and placental positioning.  We use state of the art equipment and our Sonographers are highly skilled and trained so we will do everything possible to get you the best picture.

What is SneakPeek Clinical?

SneakPeek is an early gender DNA blood test offered to women at 6 weeks gestation.  A blood sample is obtained and sent away to a lab with results given in 1-2 days via email.  SneakPeek utilizes the natural process of shared DNA in the mother’s bloodstream.  The technology has the ability to detect the presence or absence of the Y chromosome in the blood sample.  If a Y chromosome is detected the baby’s gender is male and if it is not detected then the baby’s gender is female.
